By links I mean inbound link quantity/quality. Can new sites with awesome contest outrank mediocre/established sites?

@MrDaveFelton If you have to less traffic, then you need to find ways to build traffic. It's a simple as that.

Saying that good content attracts links is only half true. If you have no back links and rank low in Google then chances are you will never get the traffic that would get you the backlinks. It is chicken and egg. Great content+no traffic=dead site

I can verify this really works. I have a page that is currently ranked #2 for two main keywords, besides the over 1,000 long tail keywords it pull hits from. I have never requested links from ANY web site or done any link exchanges. Others just like the page and naturally link to it. It often comes up as an answer in Yahoo's Answers too. Good content attracts 1-way links that are often good PR links as well. Focus on good unique dynamic content and theres a good chance the SEO will happen easily
